unless i have someone in my 'friends' account i cant chat. in yahoo messenger one first talks to the person and then adds him or her in the friends list. so will i only have to see the profile and add up a person in orkut or can i chat with him first.

Well, u can leave a "scrap" in anyone's "scrap book" on orkut. Its like leaving a text message for them on their profile. Later u can add them %26amp; send a add request as well. To leave a scrap, u can just visit anyone's profile %26amp; just key in what ever ur message is, u need not add them for this.
